Hello, I’m a designer whose has a startup business. By referral I have my first customer who wants wedding save the date, invitations, thank you cards, and wedding seal logo. How much should I charge, and should i give a discount price for referral or to increase business?

From the comments below, I will be providing the artwork to the customer where they themselves will send to a Kinkos or Staples to have them produce. Only artwork will be requested of me, the actual cards, etc. will be managed by the client. Thanks for the advice to those who responded, reallys helps!

Recommend any good books for pricing or startup? thanks!

You don’t say if you are producing the graphic design for your customer who will then take it to a printer to have it printed or if your customer expects you to put the whole printed project into his/her hands.

EITHER way–if you do your homework on this–you will find that all wedding invitation companies provide design options which are INCLUDED in their pricing. Further, they UPCHARGE the costs if the client–you, provides them with supplied artwork.

So I caution you that unless this is an unusual situation (such that your customer has a huge budget and wants a truly unique design) this project defeats any benefit for your customer.

Finally be wary of discounting any price, customers don’t expect that for referrals.

Any ideas on a cheap wedding?

March 31, 2010

My fiance and I are trying to save some money and looking for a cheap way to have a simple but nice wedding in order to invite our close family of about 80 people. Any ideas?

One idea for a cheap wedding would be to use a Justice of the Peace to marry you, they don’t "charge" although, a "donation" is much appreciated.
You can then have all your immediate family members prepare dishes for the meal at the reception.
Have the marriage and reception in a hall of some sort. Decorate it yourself with the help of friends and family by purchasing cheap (but not cheap looking) decorations at party stores or even dollar stores.
Make your own veil and purchase a Bride’s Maid Dress instead of a "Wedding Gown" and have some extra beadings or other accessories added to your suit your own taste. Purchase shoes and under garments at local department stores instead of specialty shops.
Grow your own flowers, or get some from a friends garden, or even make special boquets from fake flowers- that looks so real now-a-days, and will last forever!
Have your cake made by someone other then a wedding cake specialty store. There are alot of "at home" cake makers that do beautifully decorated, wonderful tasting cakes!

Label idea’s for message in a bottle wedding invites?

March 31, 2010

I am using message in a bottle invitations for my wedding, and I am going for an old kind of tarnished bottle label. Like something that you’d find washed up on the shore of a beach, which is where our wedding will take place. I’ve figured out everything except what to write on the bottles. I’ve the the paper and the look, but I don’t really like the idea of putting my guest’s information on the bottle, since it will all be on invitations inside the bottle. Any ideas what I could write on the label?

you can’t mail a bottle like that. just ask the USPS. you’d have to put it in a small box and put the address label on the outside. do you know what that’s going to cost you to mail? I hope you’re having a very small wedding! I have to send 65 invitations and that’s $57 in postage including the response cards.

What is the appropriate font and wording style to use for wedding invitations?

March 31, 2010

I am trying to print my own wedding invitations using MS Word 2003.

Its your wedding so what ever you like is what I would go with if I were you.

That being said, take into consideration not only the formality and style of your wedding, but the formality and style of the invitations you plan on using. A very elegant wedding and invite would not look appropriate with Comic Sans lettering, however the Engravers or Invitation font would, (not sure if your program would have either).

However if you were having a relaxed informal wedding the Comic sans would be appropriate.

Something else to consider is readability of the font, size of the font and how much room you have on your invite. You can set up the invite and print it in several fonts on plain paper and lay them over your invite to get the spacing and idea of what you like, without sacrificing invites and the expense that goes with them.

Inviting group of friends for my birthday?

March 29, 2010

I’m dying to go to the annual Knotts Scary Farm-Halloween Haunt in Southern CA. I work for the airlines, so I could get them travel passes (for a discounted rate per person). I’d like to go for a few days in the last week of October. My birthday is the 29th. How do I go about inviting them without it looking like they have to pay to party with me? I understand that some of them won’t be able to go, but I’d like to at least extend the invitation. What to do?

wow that really generous that you want ot do that for them! since its an expensive kind of party, just tell them that its a really cool way celebrate a birthday and that they will have to pay for airline tickets, but maybe offer to the hotel fee or something less extravagant. if they cant come, just let them know that you understand, and hopefully so will they
