Is this too much to ask of my wedding guests?
July 8, 2010
My fiancé and I searched and searched for the perfect wedding venue. I thought I had looked everywhere but then we booked a romantic weekend at a resort about an hour away from where we live, and we fell in love with it. We decided to switch the date of our wedding and have it at this beautiful resort. Most of our guests (95%) are from out of town anyway, so why not give them the opportunity to enjoy such a beautiful spot?
Now here’s the problem: the resort requires that we fill AT LEAST 15 hotel rooms for TWO nights. I think that most guests would have wanted to only stay one night, but the resort has a two night minimum during the Summer months. The discounted rate is $120 per night, so its not terribly expensive, but most people are coming from less than a couple hours away, so they probably would have only stayed the one night.
My plan is to send along some literature about the area with my save-the-dates, and hope that that will entice people to plan ahead and make a weekend out of it. On my invitations, I will include lodging info about another hotel a short drive away that wouldn’t require the two night minimum. But like I said, we HAVE to fill at least the 15 rooms at our resort, otherwise I will have to pay for the empty rooms. My mom thinks their policy is crazy and it should be a deal-breaker, but I love the place, understand but don’t love the policy, and I’m really thinking/hoping that at least 15 sets of guests will stay the whole weekend.
Do you think they will? Do you think its a deal-breaker?
OK people don’t HAVE to stay for two nights, they can stay at another hotel and stay for only one. Other hotels are about 10 minutes away.
Assuming that people would drive home an hour or more at 11:00 at night after drinking is crazy. People will obviously, every single one of them, need a hotel for at least the one night.
The hotel’s policy sucks for me from their standpoint I understand it. You wouldn’t want 50 rooms booked on Saturday night and then have to turn away 50 guests who would have stayed the whole weekend because only Friday is available. The Hotel books up completely every single weekend. They absolutely will not budge on their policy, I’ve tried my hardest.
And you know what, my wedding IS about me and not my guests. Like I said, they’re going to have to stay somewhere, everyone is scattered thru out the region so they’re going to need a hotel room for at least one night. I’m just wondering what’s the likleyhood that at least 15 rooms would be taken for the two nights
Firstly, good on you for asking whether or not people would be alright with this- your consideration will be appreciated at the very least by myself (and I don’t even know you
) as I am currently a guest in one of these situations. Rather than hypothesize about what your guests are potentially going to feel, I’ll tell you exactly how I feel about the wedding I am attending this Saturday.
My second cousin, to whom I am not close due to a significant age gap, is marrying a woman I have met once this Saturday. When the wedding plans were announced at Christmas, my long-time boyfriend and I were very excited for them and committed to coming. At this point they had told our extended family including myself that the wedding would be in the city where we all lived. Invitations would follow they said, everyone celebrated and had a bit too much holiday cheer.
We all began to sober up around February when the invitations came around. Not only had they included registry cards in their invitations (nothing under $400!), but their venue is in a small town which none of my family is familiar with approximately five hours away. But in the interests of my cousin’s happiness we RSVP’d yes anyway, assuming it would be a morning-afternoon affair as previously discussed so there would be no necessity in booking a hotel.
However, upon speaking with my cousin’s bride she wanted ALL the guests involved in the rehearsal the day before, and to go to a post-wedding brunch the day AFTER the wedding. So we were expected to stay two nights in the hotel they had selected. Fine, I love my cousin, so I called the hotel they had instructed their guests to contact because they got a deal on their wedding for filling ‘x’ number of rooms. Needless to say I called and received a quote of $130 a night. While you may think that’s not much, imagine the amount people are putting into attire, transportation, food and your gift in addition to now having to pay for a hotel room for YOUR BENEFIT.
Honestly, if he weren’t family I would’ve respectfully declined a while ago, but alas we are set to leave this Friday at noon. To really break down what an unfair cost this hotel room is for your guests, I’ve provided a break down of the amount of money I put into my cousin’s wedding thus far (and it’s a cash bar too!) so you have some idea of just how much your wedding is really costing people:
My Attire Including Shoes (200) [She told us what we had to wear >_< ]
Boyfriend’s Attire (120)
Drycleaning for Boyfriend’s Attire (20)
Cash Gift for Couple (50)
Gas Money (120)
Food (40)
Budget for Cash Bar (30)
—————————
$580 BEFORE THE HOTEL!
Add the 260 plus tax and we’re at
$840 TOTAL!
Ultimately I think it’s insane and I’m a little insulted by my cousin and his bridezilla, and I agree with your mom about it being a deal breaker. If it were my wedding I would either cause a fuss with the venue and eliminate the guest minimum or I’d find another venue. Your guests shouldn’t go into debt over your wedding!
Good luck!
How much of a discount should I offer Event Planners for my custom invitation services?
July 3, 2010
I own an invitation business and have recently started a wholesale program. This part is fine, I send blank stationery to retail stores where they handle the layout and printing.
Recently, I’ve been getting a lot of calls from event planners that would like to use my invitations for their clients. I will do all the layout, printing and shipping, so they are basically referring the customers to me, and I’m doing the rest.
Now, in addition the wholesale program, I will have a separate program for event planners, but I’m not sure what kind of discount to give them.
Any advice from others that offer customized products to event planners.
I would say any where from a 15 to 30 % discount the more of the discount for the less work that you do, or if you do everything and basically they referred you a customer then give them a 50.00 finder fee instead of a discount, tell them if they send you a customer then you will pay them a straight out fee everytime they send one to you and also print up business cards stating that if any of your customers send business your way then you will give them a 20.00 gift card or 20 bucks it is a great way to start and expand your business.
How to react to not getting invited to a good friends wedding?
June 25, 2010
ok so heres the deal ive been friends with this guy for at least 10 years about a year ago he told me he was getting married and wanted me to hook him up with the place to have the wedding (i work at one of the local country clubs in the area). so of course i help him out from what he said he saved 4k awsome right a discount on wedding. maybe 3 weeks after i asked him for some help he wouldnt help so i got a little bitter so i avoided calling him and of course he didnt call me. so almost a year later no invitation to wedding. and to make it worse i had to work so i got to watch the wedding which was cool because i think its special for friends to get married.
On both sides, mistakes were made. On his part if you asked him for a favor after you saved him quite a bit of money then if he had the means he should have helped you out, as in an eye for an eye. On your part you should not assume that just because you did a favor, he owes you a favor. Both of you could have called one another and you chose not to, this is what seemed to end your friendship. After a year goes by and he hasn’t heard from you so why would he invite you to the wedding? Lesson learned here, don’t be afraid to communicate and don’t let something petty ruin a friendship.
