Is it cheaper or order discount wedding invitations or to print your own?

March 7, 2010

Is it cheaper to order from a discount site or to get cheap invitations and print them yourself? Doesn’t the price of ink add up also?
We are looking at about 300 invites… also would like to do postcard RSVP’s (to cut down on cost and on wasted paper)… pretty indifferent to anything extra fancy. I am really hoping to get married on a reasonable budget, but still have a nice wedding– that doesn’t look like it was "cheap".

You could have really great invitations by creating your own at a very inexpensive price. Go to CropMom.com at http://www.cropmom.com. to Upload your photos. Make your invitation using them. You can add your own text. There are thousands of graphics to choose from to create your invitation.

For print-quality, you can purchase a JPEG file of your creation (it doesn’t cost much – less than $2) and download it to your computer.

From here you can either print your invitations at home. Or have them printed by a photofinisher such as Shutterfly or Snapfish or perhaps Costco. Your total cost for a very creative invitation would be at a substantial savings.

  2. We only paid $180 for 200 invitations and we didn’t have to worry about the whole printing process… you’d need to buy paper, ink, find a great printer etc. etc. If you have the money and can find a good price, get them printed and save yourself a headache.

  3. We printed off all of our invitations, and it was not that expensive at all! We printed 200 invitations, 200 RSVPs, and 200 envelopes, and did not even use up 1 ink cartridge. We used Wilton stationary, and their website has a template for you and everything. You can personalize it by choosing your font, color, and wording. I would totally recommend doing it yourself to save some money. It still looks great!

  4. it depends what store you go too, how many people, and how fancy your invitations are. sometimes the stores are cheaper because you buy them in a pack. how many people there are decides how much ink and how many cards in a pack. if you have few people it is cheaper to print your own. if you have a lot of people, it would be cheaper to buy a bundle at a store. if you can live to tone down the extravagant invitations with all the ribbons and swirls, to (not boring) but just enough to get you bye.

  5. With 300 invites, you’d probably need about 4-6 ink cartridges (by the time you add in rsvps, reception cards, direction cards, etc.) Depending what kind of cartridge you use in your computer and if it’s color, that’d be up to $240, plus invite kits are usually $30 for 50 of them….that’d be around another $180, for a total of $420. If you can find full invitations less than $400 (it’s going to take quite a bit of time to print off 300 invites!) I’d just order them. I’m printing mine myself, but I’m only doing 100 invites, plus MAYBE 50 save the date cards, so I’ll be able to do it with 2 cartridges and it’ll be worth it.

  6. It depends.
Some people do really extravagant print-your-own invites that can get really pricey. You need to shop around and decide what you want and how much work you want to do.

I got print-your-own ones on sale that were only $12 per box of 25. I needed 200, so I spent nearly $100 on the invites. The ink for my printer is only about $30 for one cartridge – and I won’t use a whole one up on the invites.
But assuming I use 1 cartridge, it comes down to $0.63 per invite – - that is pretty reasonable.

  7. What really matters is the design you’re using. If your invites are mostly white, but have a little bit of color on them then simply buy white cardstock and print the invitations out yourself. You won’t use hardly any ink. I’ve seen people do DIY invites and honestly, they didn’t look cheap. In fact they looked pretty professional. I wouldn’t have known the difference had they not told me.

If you plan on doing an elaborate design with lots of colors then having it done somewhere else might be the best. You’ll go through ink like crazy and it just wouldn’t be worth it.
